Both the star’s personal and InStyle’s Instagram are feeling the heat from fans in the comments section.

“It doesn’t look like her. Shame on you. #blackimagesmatter,” someone wrote on InStyle’s post of Washington’s cover.

Because of the amount of backlash, InStyle issued a statement Thursday saying they did not change the actress’ skin.

“While we did not digitally lighten Kerry’s skin tone, our cover lighting has likely contributed to this concern,” the magazine said.

Washington followed up the magazine’s statement by tweeting out:

“Beautiful statement. Thank u 4 opening this convo. Its an important 1 that needs to be had.”
