Rapper Kevin Gates has been sentenced to 180 days in jail for kicking a female fan in the stomach during a show in Lakeland, Florida, in August 2015.
During his trial, Gates plead not guilty and insisted he was simply defending himself against an aggressive fan under Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law, claiming the victim, Miranda Dixon, was trying to pull him off stage. When his attempts to get her to stop failed, he used “necessary force” to protect himself.
His attorney Jose Baez even went as far as to claim Gates’ foot didn’t actually touch Dixon, and that she was simply attempting to gain damages in an upcoming civil trial.
In a previous hearing Gates admitted that he kicked the 18-year-old fan after she reached out and grabbed him several times during the show at Rumor’s Nite Club.
The club’s head of security, Joe Hailey, testified at the trial and said the rapper’s security team did not make any special requests for additional security on the night. He also said there was room on the stage for Gates to move back if he did not want to be touched by fans, as WFLA reports.
The 30-year-old rapper had already had his Stand Your Ground defense plea rejected at an earlier hearing.
Gates previously served three and a half months of a four-month prison sentence for parole violations handed down in late 2013.
He released his major label debut, Islah, in February. This summer he revealed he had converted to Islam and later travelled to Mecca for Hajj.
