In 2015, Dancehall artiste Popcaan, whose real name is Andre Jay Sutherland, planted new standards in Dancehall from being “Way Up” to having “Good Times” on the international market. He has launched his new business Unruly Wear, including t-shirts and snapbacks, and reportedly set to drop his own rolling paper.
The “Everything Nice” deejay took on several charity shows locally and topped industry stars such as Chronixx, Protoje and Omi to the MOBO Awards “Best Reggae Act.”
An insider from the deejay’s camp revealed exclusively to Hype Life Magazine that the Jamaican entertainer is preparing to drop a hot album in 2016.
“Well, as you can see… Popcaan is aiming to set new standards as he was taught by Kartel. From collaborating with the best international acts and dropping hits after hits. However, he intend to build a foundation that will stand firm, expand and acquire loyal fans. He is now focused and is always in the studio working on new materials including Dancehall pop, spiritual and cultural songs,” said a close source to Popcaan.
“I heard he is working on a new project with Dre Skull, which features unreleased tracks with several international stars and is scheduled to drop sometime in 2016,” the source added.
Popcaan, who was lately rumored to be dating R&B singer Keyshia Cole, was recently called an “idol” by Canadian crooner Drake.
In June, stories surfaced online that Rihanna’s management reached out to Popcaan for collaborative work. However, both artistes haven’t confirmed such reports.
In an recent interview, Popcaan was asked “if his house was on fire and he could save one thing, what would that be?”
“My family and my life,” he replied.
When asked “what did he want to become growing up?”
“A soldier,” he responded.

Despite his ‘unruly’ music persona, Popcaan, has a soft heart. The deejay is known for being involved in various charity work geared at assisting those in need.
For the start of the new school year in September, the deejay staged two back-to-school treats in the two areas he grew up, Portmore, St Catherine, and St Thomas.
Last month, the deejay was touched by the story of Akalia Moore, a fifth-form student of Morant Bay High School who was in need of surgery.
Based on the severity of her condition, Akalia was scheduled to undergo corrective surgery at the Miami Neuroscience Center in Florida, USA, at an estimated cost of $2.4 million.
To assist in covering this expense, the school organised a fundraising concert last month and Popcaan not only performed free, but also made a monetary donation to Akalia.
The deejay will also be performing on the charity driven upcoming Shaggy and Friends show.
