Dancehall superstar, Adidja ‘Vybz Kartel’ Palmer and his three co-accused found guilty of the 2011 murder of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams will have to wait another week for sentencing after it was postponed on Thursday.
The judge set his new sentencing hearing for next week Thursday, April 3, 2014.
The postponement came after the judge and lawyers representing the defense and the prosecution came to an agreement that several guidelines pertaining to the sentencing hearing were not met.
Despite accepting the jury’s guilty verdict, Kartel’s lawyer, Tom Tavares-Finson says his client continues to maintain his innocence. Furthermore, when asked to make his final plea, Kartel opted not to beg for mercy in an effort to lighten the sentence.
Minutes later, however, Justice Lennox Campbell pushed back the sentencing to April 3 as to facilitate written submissions from defence lawyers regarding sentencing guidelines, according to Nationwide Radio. Justice Campbell also said he would like to hear from a member of Williams’ family, though the director of public prosecutions, Paula Llewellyn has said that may not be appropriate.
The family was put in protective custody immediately following the verdict, amidst reports that a bounty was on the heads of members of Williams’ family.
