Vybz Kartel got snubbed by this year’s Your View Awards, formerly Youth View Awards.
The rebranded event comes with new rules which are at the center of contention between the YVA and Vybz Kartel’s fanatics.
The nominees were announced on Thursday (Jan 11) at the launch of the 2018 YVA’s at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel and the incarcerated Dancehall superstar’s name was noticeably absent.
The Kartel’s inability to meet the event’s new qualifying criteria has been given as the reason for the prolific artist’s non-appearance on the list of nominees.
To be eligible for nominations, artists must be able to perform at the event ceremony set for February 24.
Many supporters of the imprisoned artist have already taken to social media to air their anger and disapproval at Kartel’s snub. Some are saying its a move to silence the incarcerated deejay while others believe that the YVA took the right step.
“So they have to ban Vybz Kartel so that other artists like Alkaline can win such a shame on the YVA, what is an award show without the Worl’Boss, in a Addi voice,” one fan expressed.
“We all know that the YVA is a Gazanation award show because every year Kartel dominates even when other artists out a road a put in the work. So I guess them a try remove the bias now,” another fan commented.
Meanwhile, the “Fever” deejay’s competitor, Alkaline leads the 2018 YVA nomination with six nods including Hottest Summer Song (Red Eye), Favorite Local Male Artist, Favorite International Local Artist, Favorite Dancehall Artist, Favorite Chart Topper, Favorite Video Concept (Afterall), and Favorite Collaboration (“Gyalis Pro” featuring Sean Paul). Popcaan and Aidonia trail Alkaline with four nominations each.
Vybz Kartel, who was last year’s biggest winner, scooped five awards, namely; Male Local Artiste of the Year, Dancehall Artiste, Hottest Summer Song Fever, and Local Chart Topping Song of the Year Fever, as well as Musical Collaboration for Loodi done with Shensea.
