Alicia Keysย has disclosed that she almost gave her song โIf I Ainโt Got Youโ toย Christina Aguileraย before it became one of her signature records.
In a new interview, the Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter discussed her time working with Aguilera on the pop starโs 2002 album โStripped.โ
โShe reached out and was like, โWould you write something for me?โ And then it came through so many emails.ย What a voice! I know I could write something fire for her,โ Keys toldย Stereogum.
โSo time passed and I hadnโt written the song yet. And [the label] was like, โDo you have anything for Christina?โ I remember I had just recently written โIf I Ainโt Got You,'โ she continued.
โAre you fucking crazy? Weโre not giving her that song. Are you out of your mind?โ he replied.
At the time, Keys assumed she would simply write โa hundred moreโ songs just like it, and that Aguilera should hear it.
โI was like, โWhy not? Iโll write a hundred more of those, itโs fine. I think she should hear it. I donโt really think itโs a big deal.โ But I thought, โFine, Iโll go write another song,โโ she recalled.
โI went off and wrote โImpossible.โ I went to cut it with her and I love how she sounded on it. It was such a cool vibe for us to be able to work together during those times,โ Keys said of the โGenie In A Bottleโ hitmaker.
โBut I will never forget that I would have given away โIf I Ainโt Got You.โ Isnโt that crazy? So thatโs a good story,โ she added.
Alicia Keysโ revelation about the song comes amid a press tour for her seventh studio album, โAlicia.โ Released on Friday (Sept. 18), the album features songs such as โShow Me Loveโ and โTime Machineโ and has received generally positive reviews so far.
โAliciaโ is now available on all streaming services.
