DMX Hospitalized After Heart Attack Amid Reports Of Overdose
DMX is reportedly in “grave condition” following a recent drug overdose.
The American rapper was hospitalized for a heart attack on Friday night (April 2), his lawyer Murray Richman told media reporters. Richman expressed that DMX is in “grave condition,” but did not disclose what had caused the heart attack.
DMX, born Earl Simmons, is currently in a hospital in White Plains, New York, and is in the critical care unit; Richman has been the only person close to the 50-year-old rapper to comment on his condition.
While details have not been confirmed, TMZ reported that DMX overdosed on Friday night at his home around 11 p.m., causing the heart attack.
One source familiar with the situation told TMZ that he is in a “vegetative state,” while another source said he has “some brain activity.”
As of Saturday evening, DMX remains on life support, Richman disclosed to Rolling Stone.
On Saturday night, TMZ reported that it received a statement from a representative of DMX.
“Last night Earl ‘DMX' Simmons was rushed to the hospital after collapsing at home. At this time he remains in ICU in critical condition. Earl has been a warrior his entire life. This situation represents yet another road he must conquer,” the statement said.
“The Simmons Family appreciates the overwhelming outpouring of heartfelt love, encouragement, support, and prayers for Earl. Earl is someone whose life and music have been a source of inspiration and strength to so many people around the world. It is reassuring to see his fans return that same passion and energy to him during his time of need,” the statement continued.
DMX has spoken openly about his addiction to crack cocaine and had received in-patient treatment as recently as 2019.
The veteran rapper is best known for his platinum-selling albums “It's Dark and Hell Is Hot” and “… And Then There Was X,” which contained signature hits like “Get at Me Dog”, “What's My Name?”, and “Party Up (Up in Here).” He has released seven albums and earned three Grammy nominations. He also appeared in feature films like Belly, Romeo Must Die, Exit Wounds, and Cradle 2 the Grave.
