Tommy Lee Sparta was seriously injured during a tussle in prison and is now receiving treatment.
After an altercation with correctional officers at the Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre in downtown Kingston earlier today (Feb. 21), the Dancehall entertainer is now being treated at the Kingston Public Hospital (KPH).
Tommy Lee Sparta was reportedly “subdued” after failing to comply with instructions and hurling “breakfast” at the correctional officer, according to sources close to Jamaica’s Department of Correctional Services.
“Reports received from the acting superintendent on duty are that the inmate refused to re-enter his cell following the distribution of breakfast. Upon repeat of the command, the inmate hurled his breakfast at the staff officer in retaliation. He was subdued by the officer and both parties received injuries,” the Department of Correctional Services said in a press release.
Tommy Lee Sparta, whose real name is Leroy Russell, was transferred to the Kingston Public Hospital after he was taken on a stretcher to the medical facility at the prison for treatment.
Boss Lady Muzik, Inc, his management team has since issued a release stating that they are “monitoring everything very closely.”
“This is to inform all supporters, friends, family and fans that we are aware of the situation with our dear family member and client, Leroy Junior Russell PKA Tommy Lee Sparta. We are monitoring everything very closely. We truly appreciate all your prayers and positive vibrational energy for his speedy recovery,” Boss Lady Muzik, Inc expressed on an Instagram post.
The Department of Correctional Services said an investigation has been launched into the incident.
Tommy Lee Sparta has been incarcerated since March 2021, after pleading guilty to illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. He has been sentenced to serve three years in prison.
On December 25, 2020, the Jamaican entertainer was arrested along New Kingston’s Holborn Road with an illegal firearm.
