Spice, Shenseea and Jada Kingdom have been confirmed for this year’s staging of Reggae Sumfest 2022.
The female Dancehall entertainers, Spice and Shenseea, join a slew of fellow Jamaican musicians including Aidonia, Alkaline, Masicka, Govana, Teejay, Ding Dong, Chronic Law, Marcy Chin, Intence Rytikal, Skeng, and Jahshii among others for main festival night one slated for July 22.
Meanwhile, Dancehall songstress, Jada Kingdom, joins Beres Hammond, Beenie Man, Bounty Killer, Cham, Wayne Wonder, Koffee, Spragga Benz, Dexta Daps, Sizzla Kalonji, and Christopher Martin among others slated to perform at main festival night two on July 23.
Spice recently took to social media to reveal how she got booked for Reggae Sumfest 2022.
In an Instagram live session earlier this week, the “So Mi Like It” deejay disclosed that she doubled her booking fee for the annual when Josef ‘Joe’ Bogdanovich, the executive producer of Reggae Sumfest, contacted her and he agreed to her terms.
“I’m booked for Sumfest, you know. I’ll be there, live and living” she stated in the video.
“Remember say Joe money tall. Make me tell unuh wah mi do Joe… Joe Bogdanovich paid me my money and confirmed Sumfest for 2020… COVID come and lick weh Joe… Sumfest cah keep again in 2020, we locked down. Joe said, ‘alright, let us just try to see if we can do it for 2021.’ Anyway, when Joe Bogdanovich paid me for Sumfest, Joe just carried couple millions come gimi and said, ‘I’ll tell you what Spice, we gon need you for Sumfest for 2020.’ So I said, ‘Joe, I’m gonna need a bag,’ and Joe go so bap and dropped the bag pon mi for 2020 Sumfest. And then now COVID come and said,’Joe, it’s not gonna work out.’ So Joe Bogdanovich said, ‘You know what Spice, You just keep the money for 2021.’ 2021, COVID go so, bam! Mash up Joe again, no Sumfest can’t keep. So you see when 2022 come now, I said, ‘Joe, me price gone up, you gotta give me more money Joe. Everything raised Joe, Mi say, all gas high high. Mi say between me and you Joe, the money doubled,'” she continued.
“Joe said, ‘come on now Spice. You know we have a relationship going…’ I said, ‘Jo, that was then, this is now, the price gone up!’ Joe rich. Joe just back out him money and said, ‘let us do this because without you, there is no Sumfest.’ You all gotta know this, people anticipate when I come on stage and say, ‘Yo, Jamaica! B-mboclaut,'” she added.
Spice recently told media reporters that Beyonce is her number one dream collaborator while discussing her Grammy nomination and her journey from “homelessness to greatness.”
Shenseea, who is currently promoting her debut album, Alpha, is looking forward to her triumphant return to the concert dubbed “the world’s greatest Jamaican Reggae-Dancehall music festival.” She was booked as one of the headliners for Sumfest 2022, according to the event promoter, Downsound Entertainment.
Shenseea’s 14-track album, which was released on March 11 under Rich Immigrants and Interscope Records, features Hip Hop stars Megan Thee Stallion, Tyga, Offset, and Jamaican giants Sean Paul and Beenie Man.
During an interview with MTV News in March, Shenseea explained the significance of her album title, “Alpha.”
“I wanted to call it ALPHA because it resonates with my personality, it’s who I am. I’m a leader when it comes on to my ShenYengz and whatever I want to achieve in life, I lead first, I set the trends. It doesn’t matter if the world is against me, I’m gonna do what I wanna do because I am the ALPHA, I am strong, being everything that I have endured till this day in my life. I know who I am, I know what I want, I know the strength that it took for me to get here and I just feel like it was the perfect name,” she stated.
Shenseea recently dropped the music video for her single “R U That,” featuring 21 Savage, showed off her new French Bulldog gifted to her by her date, and disclosed that she prefers to be in a relationship with a black man.
Jada Kingdom returns to Reggae Sunmest after making her debut appearance at the 2018 show and again in 2019.
In addition to recently signing a music deal with New York-based record label, Republic Records, the Jamaican-born singer is currently working on her forthcoming album.
Jada Kingdom’s migration from Kingston to the United States two years ago (first to Atlanta before she then settled in Miami) was initially “a huge culture shock” as she had to get used to not living near a beach. However, the 23-year-old revealed that her relocation has already made a “huge difference” in her life.
“Coming to America, you have to have a plan, especially for a person like me and my career,” she told NME last year November.
“I went through a lot of traumatic phases in my life in Jamaica, but being [in Miami], under good care and good condition, it’s been amazing. If I’d come here and didn’t have a plan, I would have been lost in the sauce, or back in Jamaica without any goals. Jamaica, as I said earlier, has its own jungle. [But] let’s not act like America is a bed of roses — it’s rough up here too. I remember being broke in America, it’s not nice,” she explained.
Jada Kingdom recently delivered a moment of grace with her cover of the late great Amy Winehouse’s classic “Back To Black” before taking to Instagram to flaunt her bikini figure in a shocking green and pink two-piece swimsuit at the poolside.
Reggae Sumfest 2022 already has music fans buzzing. Preparations for this year’s staging of the annual event are well underway, and the organizers have stated that the show will include a “strong lineup” and “awesome experience.”
“After the two-year break due to COVID we had to come back with a bang and give the fans an epic lineup… We will have a more spacious and more comfortable VIP section. The whole experience is going to be awesome,” Josef Bogdanovich told the Jamaica STAR last month.
“This is only the tip of the iceberg, however, we have been planning the return of Sumfest for two years and we have an incredible festival planned for fans of Jamaican music,” he continued.
“Music is the ultimate expression of independence. Reggae and Dancehall have always been a true reflection of the strength and fire of the Jamaican people. It is, therefore, essential that Jamaican music is right at the heart of the celebrations of this critical milestone in Jamaica’s journey,” he added.
The 2020 Reggae Sumfest virtual edition dubbed “A Taste of Reggae Sumfest,” which featured Gyptian, Freddie Mcgregor, Tarrus Riley, Maxi Priest, Koffee, Chronic Law, Marcy Chin, Daddy1, Ding Dong, Teejay, Shenseea, Konhens, Agent Sasco among others, was streamed live on YouTube for free. This year marks the first live staging of Reggae Sumfest after it was halted due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The main festival takes place at the Catherine Hall Entertainment Center in Montego Bay on Friday (July 22) and Saturday (July 23).
