The singer was subjected to a secondary search on her way to Brazil, from which marijuana was found.
The authorities decided to search her after the X-ray machine at Dulles International Airport detected a knife and torch lighter in a piece of her luggage.
She was subsequently taken into custody and charged with possession of marijuana according to a law enforcement official.
However, her attorney insists she was never arrested and that the incident will not interfere with any scheduled appearances.
“Lauren Jauregui was not arrested and detained as reported, but simply given a citation for possession of marijuana and released on her own recognizance,” attorney Dina LaPolt said.
“She will address the matter appropriately through the legal system. This will not interfere with any future scheduled performances or activities.”
The 20-year-old singer was released on a summons, the spokeswoman said.
The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority could not share any additional information about the incident.
The singer recently came under attention previously for “coming out” as a “bisexual Cuban-American” and addressing the supporters of President-elect Trump.
