Easily the most controversial artist of his generation, the now incarcerated Vybz Kartel had an appetite for shocking his fans with controversial lyrics and actions.
However, one of his more shocking announcements came when the Dancehall entertainer got married in January 2006.
Kartel, whose real name is Adidjah Palmer, tied the knot with his lover of four years, Stacy Elliott in a private ceremony at the Registrar General Department branch office on Trevennion Park in Cross Roads, Kingston.
Immediately, Dancehall insiders were skeptical about the union, with some speculating that Kartel only married Elliott to acquire a US visa, an accusation Kartel has long since denied.
In an interview, the “Romping Shop” deejay, who is known for his hardcore sexual content in his music and numerous baby mothers, revealed why he popped the question to the love-of-his-life at the time.
“Mi just get up mad and decide fi do it,” Vybz Kartel told media reporters on his big day.
“Is like mi get a wedding fever from wha day because my babymother’s mother got married recently, and I was the best man for the groom, so I just decided to do it. I flew her in from New York for the wedding, and it’s all good, I am in love, I am happy, this is just glorious.” he gushed at the time while holding hands with his beaming, brown-skinned bride.
“From the first time, I met her, I knew she was special. So we talked a couple of times on the phone, it wasn’t a groupie thing, and we just fell in love little by little. When I am in New York, me and har roll straight, we can talk, we can reason, she has her own thing going on, love is great… y’ know, don’t get it twisted, a thug can fall in love,” he added, laughing.
Vybz Kartel was the essence of thug chic in a black suit, with a white tux, silver jewelry, dark shades and white Mondini Italian leather shoes while his bride, then a 31 year-old bank supervisor, who lives in Bronx, New York, looked stunning in a white chiffon dress.
The “Ignite the World” deejay appeared relaxed before the afternoon ceremony. He reportedly cracked jokes prior to saying their ‘I dos’ in front of a marriage officer and two witnesses.
